Overview
Port Broughton lies on the east coast of Spencer Gulf at the northern tip of Yorke Peninsula, about 170 km north‑west of Adelaide and 56 km south of Port Pirie. At the 2016 census the town had 1,034 residents, but summer holidays see the population swell to over 4,000 as visitors enjoy its protected shoreline, shallow waters, fishing, crabbing and other watersports, making it a popular retirement and holiday destination.
Local services include Port Broughton Area School, a district hospital, churches and sporting clubs for cricket, netball and Australian rules football. Accommodation ranges from two caravan parks and a motel to units and nearby holiday shacks at Fisherman Bay, offering both permanent and short‑term housing. The town is a two‑hour drive from Adelaide and retains historic transport links such as the former Port Broughton railway line and jetty, while a boat ramp supports current recreational boating.
