Stirling North, known locally as Catninga, lies 8 km east of Port Augusta at the foot of the Southern Flinders Ranges. At the 2021 census the suburb recorded 2,793 residents, a rise from 350 in 2008. The town began as a railway‑employee settlement in the 1980s with about 100 houses, and subsequent residential growth has turned it into a primary satellite community for Port Augusta.
The town provides basic services such as hotel accommodation, food shops, a general store, fuel outlets, a post office and public telephones. Residents can enjoy a golf course, tennis court, bike track, public park and the heritage‑listed Davenport Reservoir and Storage Tank.
