Overview
Bridgewater sits 19 kilometres north of Hobart’s central business district on the eastern shore of the Derwent River, within the Municipality of Brighton. It is one of the first suburbs travellers encounter on the Midland Highway and the Brighton Bypass, with the Bridgewater Bridge linking the eastern and western river banks. The suburb’s housing mix is dominated by a large public‑housing estate built in the 1970s, a legacy of the state’s long‑running public‑housing programme. Although the original South line railway station was demolished in 1997, the nearby Brighton Transport Hub and East Derwent Highway provide modern road and public‑transport connections.
Family life in Bridgewater is anchored by three primary schools, Northern Suburbs Christian, St Paul’s (Catholic) and East Derwent (public), and Bridgewater High School, which includes a working school farm. The government’s Jordan River Learning Federation now links these schools into a K‑12 pathway, while the community enjoys recreation at Weily Park, home to Derwent United FC soccer club. Heritage sites such as Coronation Hall and St Mary’s Anglican Church add local character to everyday living.
