Overview
Claremont is a rural‑residential suburb that straddles the Glenorchy and Derwent Valley councils, lying about 6 km north of Glenorchy town. The 2021 Census recorded 8,397 residents. The housing stock reflects its evolution from a few farms to a planned workers’ estate; the 1922 Cadbury’s Estate provided model‑village homes for factory staff, while public housing was added between the 1960s and 1980s, giving the area a varied mix of historic and contemporary dwellings.
Residents enjoy a range of local amenities, including the Claremont Plaza shopping centre, two government primary schools, a senior secondary college and Holy Rosary Catholic School. Sporting life is supported by the Claremont Football Club, Metro Claremont soccer team, Scout and Guide groups, and several parks such as James Austin and Roseneath. Road access is provided by the Brooker Highway (National Route 1), and the former rail corridor now serves as a cycle track linking the suburb to the wider Hobart region.
