Dowsing Point is a residential enclave within the City of Glenorchy, about 2 km north‑east of Glenorchy’s centre on the north‑east shore of the River Derwent. Goodwood Road (B35) runs west‑east through the suburb, and the western end of the Bowen Bridge links the Brooker Highway with the East Derwent Highway, offering easy commuter access across Hobart.

Although only a few houses sit between the Commonwealth‑owned Derwent Barracks and the Elwick Racecourse, the suburb blends residential, commercial and recreational uses. The Tasmanian Technopark, a Qantas call centre and the army barracks share the area with Goodwood Park and nearby attractions such as the Derwent Entertainment Centre, Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park and the waterfront of Prince of Wales Bay. Air‑quality monitoring in 2018 recorded medium levels of NOx and SO₂ in postcode 7010.
