Overview

Orford is a seaside village on Tasmania’s east coast, home to 685 residents at the 2021 census. Nestled around the mouth of the Prosser River and the edge of Prosser Bay, the town enjoys a relaxed lifestyle built around its popular beaches, fishing spots and walking trails. Daily needs are met by a supermarket, three cafés and eateries, a hotel, police and fire brigade, a primary school and a library, while a steady flow of holiday‑makers swells the population to over 3,000 in summer, supporting a mix of detached homes, many owned outright or with a mortgage, and a growing number of non‑resident “shack” owners.

The village is about 73 km north‑east of Hobart, reached in roughly 1½ hours via the Tasman Highway (A3). Access from northern Tasmania follows the Midland Highway to Lake Leake Road and then the A3. Tassielink bus routes 736 and 737 connect Orford with Hobart and the east‑coast towns, the nearest airport is Hobart Airport, and the nearby port at Triabunna (6 km north) provides ferry services to Maria Island. Cyclists also use the coastal roads, and local landmarks such as Paradise Gorge, Millingtons Beach and the Prosser River lie within a few kilometres.
