The 2021 Australian Census recorded 1,209 residents, reflecting a sizable permanent community despite its reputation as a holiday‑home hub; more than half of the houses are unoccupied for most of the year. The seaside setting offers immediate access to nearby beaches such as Roaring Beach, Primrose Beach and Gypsy Bay, supporting a relaxed coastal lifestyle.
