Overview
Coolaroo lies 18 km north of Melbourne’s CBD in the City of Hume and recorded 3,193 residents at the 2021 census. Named after an Aboriginal term meaning “brown snake”, the area was set aside for public housing in 1951 with the first estates built from 1966. The community is multicultural, with significant Iraqi, Turkish and Lebanese populations and languages such as Arabic, Turkish and Assyrian Neo‑Aramaic spoken at home. Local schools include Coolaroo South Primary School and St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox College.
Coolaroo is well served by public transport: Coolaroo railway station on the Craigieburn line, nearby Upfield station, and four bus routes (532, 540, 542, 901) linking the suburb to Broadmeadows, Craigieburn and Melbourne Airport. Shopping is concentrated in the adjacent Meadow Heights and Dallas shopping centres. The housing mix combines the original mid‑1960s public‑housing estates with later private development, providing a variety of rental and ownership options.
