Overview
Cowwarr sits 27 km north‑east of Traralgon and 174 km east of Melbourne in the Shire of Wellington. At the 2016 census the town and its surrounds recorded 368 residents, enjoying a blend of historic homes and newer dwellings set against heritage structures such as the 1918 Arts & Craft butter factory (now the former Cowwarr Art Space), the 1930 Art Deco Cricket Club Hotel and the public hall opposite, plus a picturesque Catholic church.
The community is rooted in agriculture, with dairy farms drawing water from Rainbow Creek and the nearby Thomson River. Sporting life centres on an Australian Rules football team in the North Gippsland Football League and a netball side, while the former railway line, closed to freight in 1987, has been repurposed as the Gippsland Plains Rail trail for walking and cycling. Local education was provided by Cowwarr Primary School, located a short distance from town.
