Carlisle lies on the Bassendean Dunes of the Swan Coastal Plain and is generally flat with gentle undulations, ranging from about 13 m to 27 m above sea level. The suburb’s terrain provides occasional views of the Perth CBD and Burswood skylines from its higher points.
Carlisle was originally part of early land allocations after 1829, later developing after the 1890s as growth spread from neighbouring Victoria Park. The name changed to Carlisle on 23 May 1919 following a ratepayers’ meeting, and early community infrastructure included a primary school (1919), a Methodist church (1927) and a Catholic church (1937).
The suburb is bordered by Orrong Road to the north, Roberts Road to the west, and the Armadale railway line along with Rutland Avenue to the south. Briggs/Planet/Kew streets form the eastern edge, creating a grid‑style street network.
