Overview

Walkaway is a small town in the City of Greater Geraldton, Western Australia, with a 2016 census population of 270. Its name derives from “Wagga wah,” the bend in the nearby Greenough River, and the settlement grew around a railway station opened in 1887 and linked to the Eastern Railway in 1894. Although the original Midland line’s importance waned after the 1915 Northern Railway was built, the historic rail corridor still defines the town’s character and provides easy access to Geraldton and the wider region.

Residents enjoy a modest range of local amenities, including a community hall that once served as a cinema and the heritage‑listed Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The area is a hub for renewable‑energy projects – the Walkaway and Mumbida wind farms and the Greenough River Solar Farm lie within a few kilometres – offering a contemporary backdrop to a tranquil rural lifestyle and a mix of housing options for families and retirees alike.
