Alyangula, NT 885
Overview
Alyangula is the largest township on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory and was built in the late 1960s to house Groote Eylandt Mining Company workers. The 2021 Census recorded 751 residents, almost all GEMCO employees, creating a tight‑knit community. The town enjoys a tropical savanna climate with a warm, dry season and a hot, wet monsoon. Amenities include a first‑class resort, four clubs, an arts centre, coffee shop, golf course, 25 m swimming pool and a church.
Daily needs are met locally with half a dozen shops, a bank, post office, travel agency and subsidised fuel that is among the cheapest in Australia. Education and health services include a school to Year 11, a child‑care centre, a training centre, an area health centre, as well as a courthouse and police station. The mix of resort accommodation, club facilities and worker housing creates a self‑contained lifestyle on the remote island.
