Risdon Vale, TAS 7016
Overview
Risdon Vale is an outer Hobart suburb on the eastern shore of the River Derwent, adjoining historic Risdon Cove. The community grew after a post office opened in 1960 and a subdivision of a few hundred homes between 1961‑63, centred south of Gardenia Road and around Waratah Road, with Risdon Vale Primary School founded the same year. Today about 3,000 people live in a mix of the original family homes.
Residents benefit from the East Derwent Highway, Bowen Bridge and Grasstree Hill Road, while Metro Tasmania buses connect the suburb to Hobart, Rosny Park, Glenorchy and Bridgewater. Nearby Risdon Brook Park and Dam offers a 4 km walking track with views of Mount Wellington. The area also contains Tasmania’s only maximum‑security prison complex and a volunteer fire brigade on Sugarloaf Road, providing essential services.
