Coolaroo lies 18 km north of Melbourne’s CBD in the City of Hume and recorded 3,193 residents at the 2021 census. The suburb’s name, meaning “brown snake,” reflects its Aboriginal roots. Developed as a Housing Commission estate from the mid‑1960s, Coolaroo now offers a mix of post‑1960s homes and later dwellings, supporting a multicultural community with significant Iraqi, Turkish and Lebanese backgrounds and a variety of languages spoken at home.
