Separation Creek is a tiny coastal village perched at the mouth of its namesake creek along the iconic Great Ocean Road. Its 250‑metre beach, framed by the Great Otway and Otway Forest National Parks, is a popular spot for picnics and fishing, though the surf is classified as highly hazardous and unsuitable for safe bathing. The community is anchored by the Wye River‑Separation Creek Progress Association, which works to protect the environment, and the area even counts singer Mike Brady among its part‑time residents.

The locality has no retail outlets; the nearest shop and hotel are in neighboring Wye River, reachable by car on the Great Ocean Road or on foot via Paddys Path. A 2014 $4 million bridge upgrade added a pedestrian walkway, improving access between the two towns. Aside from the coastal strip, the land is dominated by national park forest, with only two inland routes, Wye Road and the Benwerrin‑Mount Sabine Road, providing limited road connectivity. Housing is low‑density, and the community rebuilt after the 2015 bushfire that destroyed many homes.
