Overview

Meekatharra, a remote town in Western Australia’s Mid West, means “place of little water” in the Yamatji language. At the 2016 census it was home to 708 people, 34 % of whom are of Aboriginal descent. The community serves as a major supply hub for the pastoral and mining districts of the Murchison region, with sheep and cattle transshipment now handled by road trains. Residents benefit from regional services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the School of the Air, while the hot, dry climate brings clear skies and very low rainfall between August and November.
