Tasmania is Australia’s smallest and least populous state, with 573,479 residents recorded in June 2023, and about 40 % living in the Greater Hobart area. Its highly decentralised settlement pattern means housing ranges from apartment and townhouse stock in Hobart to detached homes and farm‑style properties across the Midlands, coastal towns and the more remote islands that make up the state’s thousand‑plus offshore communities.

The economy is the second‑smallest among Australian states and is driven principally by tourism, agriculture, aquaculture, education and health‑care.
